About Total Consecration to Jesus Through Mary
(According to the method of Saint Louis de Montfort)
Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary is a beautiful exercise and most necessary in our times to increase our devotion to Jesus, become instruments of good in the hands of Our Lady, and save our souls. The word “Consecration” is derived from a Latin word meaning “to make sacred.” By consecrating yourself to Jesus through Mary you are set apart for a sacred purpose and you give Mary free reign to make you pleasing to God and turn you into a saint. Saint Louis de Montfort (1673-1716) saw that since it was through Our Lady that Christ came into the world that it is through Our Lady we must go back to Christ.
Dying on the cross Christ said to Mary, "Woman, behold thy Son"and to John, "Son, behold thy Mother," (John 19: 26-27). At that moment Christ gave us His Mother and we became her children. Mary's entire life's mission was to do the Will of her Son, Jesus Christ who is God. Her entire being was totally consecrated and dedicated to the service of Our Lord. When we consecrate ourselves to her, she, as a good mother does, transforms us and helps us to also become totally on fire with love for God. She guides us to do God's Holy Will and save not only our own souls but also the souls of many others. Saint Louis de Montfort wrote Mary is "the safest, easiest, shortest and most perfect way of approaching Jesus" (TD 55).

Saint Louis de Montfort's method of Consecrating oneself to Jesus Through Mary consists of 33 Days of Preparation followed by the day of Consecration. The Consecration itself is best done on a Marian Feast Day. The 33 Days are broken down into four parts. Part One is a preliminary period of twelve days where we endeavor to "free ourselves of the spirit of the world."Part Two is focused on knowing ourselves. Part Three is focused on knowing the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Part Four is focused on knowing Jesus Christ.

The method and length set forth by Saint Louis de Montfort can be adjusted according to one's circumstances and is not meant to be a completely unchangeable program. It is a good and holy practice to annually renew one's consecration by taking three days of preparation or by going through the entire 33 days again.
